Profession of Faith and Oath of Fidelity

On Sunday evening, February 22, the NDS community gathered in the chapel to witness 15 of our deacons profess their faith and take an oath of fidelity. These men will be ordained to the priesthood in just a few short months, and this was one of the final steps towards their goal. Earlier in February, the third year seminarians who will be ordained deacons this summer took a similar oath of fidelity. In each case, Fr. James Wehner, the rector of Notre Dame Seminary, presided over the ceremony. The profession of faith involved a recitation of the creed and an oath to live up to the teachings and authority of the Catholic Church. Near the end of each of the ceremonies, each deacon or candidate placed his hand on the book of the Gospels and invoked God’s help to uphold these promises. Each ceremony took place during Sunday Vespers and was followed by a community dinner to congratulate and honor our brothers for this new step in their path to ordination.
