Seminarians Assist with Flood Recovery

On the weekend of August 13-14, our nation learned about the floods that swept through Baton Rouge, Lafayette, and Lake Charles areas here in Louisiana. Several of our seminarians’ families were effected. That weekend, several seminarians mobilized for immediate flood recovery. As the week progressed and the devastation continued as new seminarians arrived at Notre Dame Seminary, our rector mobilized the new men with assistance from Baton Rouge priests to assist with recovery in the town of French Settlement on Saturday, August 20, where swamp waters ravaged this historic area. Nearly 50 seminarians converged on the town assisting the local pastor Father Jason Palermo who steered seminarians to hardest hit areas. The following Saturday, August 27, 110 seminarians and faculty were divided between St. Martinsville, Denham Springs, and Albany areas of Louisiana for further clean-up. The seminary community has been offering material assistance but also prayer and solidarity for those affected by this disaster. We learned that bringing the Good News of Jesus to these terrible situations is an essential aspect of the Church’s mission which requires not only spiritual solidarity but also physical witness.
