Celebrating 40 years of Episcopal Ministry

On September 14, 2021, the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, we celebrated Archbishop Hughes’ 40th anniversary of his consecration as a bishop. Archbishop Hughes was ordained a priest for the archdiocese of Boston. He served as a spiritual Director and eventually as Rector of Saint John seminary in Boston. Saint John Paul II appointed him as auxiliary Bishop of Boston, Bishop of Baton Rouge, and then archbishop of New Orleans.

Ever since his retirement in 2009, Archbishop Hughes has exercised ministry at Notre Dame Seminary as professor of spiritual theology, spiritual director, retreat master, and confessor. He continues to assist Archbishop Aymond with the sacrament of confirmation, parish anniversaries, and archdiocesan events. The seminary community saluted and recognized this anniversary during mass and with a spiritual bouquet presented by the seminarians. May the Lord bless Archbishop Hughes with many more years of ministry. We are grateful for his service to Notre Dame Seminary and the Catholic Church.
