Wake of Archbishop Francis Schulte

Former New Orleans archbishop Francis B. Schulte died at the age of 89 on January 17th, 2016 at around 9:00 p.m. after several weeks in hospice care at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Darby, Pennsylvania. Archbishop Schulte served as the 12th Archbishop of New Orleans from 1989 to 2002, and was instrumental in the raising of funds for local Catholic academic institutions such as Notre Dame Seminary during his time as archbishop. On Wednesday, January 27th, the body of Archbishop Schulte was received by the Notre Dame Seminary community and Archbishop Aymond on the front steps of the seminary, after which a wake was held from 3:30-8:00 p.m. The following day, a wake was held at St. Louis Cathedral from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and the funeral mass took place on Thursday, January 28th at 2:00 p.m. in the historical cathedral. Archbishop Schulte was buried in a crypt near the main altar of the cathedral.
