Rev. Robert J. Stahl, S.M. Memorial Library

The Rev. Robert J. Stahl, S.M. Memorial Library, which houses more than 86,000 volumes, including bound periodicals, is located in St. Joseph Hall of Philosophy.  The main entrance and reading room are located on the first floor, just off the rotunda, but the library comprises three floors of the building. Its main print collection is housed on two floors of stack shelving; there is also a dedicated reference room which in turn houses the periodicals collection. The main reading room also has a writing lab, and an internet research center.  A quiet study area, the Scriptorium, with seating for 34 persons is located in the basement of the library.

The book and periodical collections reflect the mission, the purpose, and objectives of the seminary, supporting the four pillars of priestly formation.  The Library subscribes to approximately 160 periodicals titles, most being peer-reviewed, academic journals. In addition to these, the Library has electronic subscriptions to many of the same journals as well as an ever-increasing number of web-based periodicals databases and other electronic resources. Many of these are hosted at remote locations ensuring that Seminarians and students have access to information and research even during times away from the Seminary.

For research work or other specialized projects, Seminarians and students of Notre Dame Seminary can borrow books from other libraries through the LALINC (Louisiana Academic Library Information Network Consortium) program. The bibliographic holdings of the library are fully accessible through the online catalog found at www.ndslibrary.follettdestiny.com

Seminarians and students enrolled in the school respect the honor system and have free access to the library at any time.  The library also extends borrowing privileges to Notre Dame Seminary alumni and members of the religious community at large. Students who attend schools which are part of the LALINC system also have borrowing privileges.  For LALINC patrons, the following restrictions apply:  (1) An appointment with the librarian must be made by calling (504) 855-7426, ext. 700, or via email at library@nds.edu.  (2) A patron barcode must be issued by the librarian. (3) Books are loaned for three weeks and may be renewed once.
